Martina Great, Trace Not So Much!
In the Shine All Night show, Trace sounded great, this was my 5th time seeing him, and while he doesn't quite have the basey voice he had when I first saw him in the mid/late '90s, his voice is still far superior to that of 99% of male artists in any genre of music. The music should never over power a singer with such a booming voice! What I did hear of Chris was both entertaining and a quality voice, but when you miss half the lyrics, it just leaves you more than a little disappointed. I would give Chris a 'B', but his sound man an 'F'.
As a long time music fan and concert goer, there are certain things that I look for when I see a concert, whether it be a country show or a rock show, the most important being: how did the singer sound... In the five times I've seen Trace this is the first time he had on a few occasions pulled the mic too far from his mouth when he was hitting big notes, and we lost him all together, but other than those instances, he was spot on as usual. He gets an 'A' grade from me.
Where as, this was my first time seeing Martina, and while I enjoy her fun lyrics, and her strong voice, I wouldn't consider myself a fan of hers, and as such, I don't know all the lyrics to her songs. This is where my problems come in, whoever was mixing her sound made the same mistake that so many rock bands have made when I was seeing them live, they think the louder the music, the better the show, which in my opinion is a BIG mistake! In this case, I was unable to hear at least 50% of the lyrics to Martina's songs, and for a lady with as big a voice as she has, this should NEVER happen. I would still highly recommend this show to others, I just hope you already know the lyrics to Martina's songs, it might make it a little more entertaining for you. Trace fans, be happy, he's still the best male vocalist around!
